The current situation
Plastic production is increasing exponentially, resulting in more plastic waste than ever. 8 million tons of plastic makes its way into the oceans every year, and although single-use plastics are often used for a minuscule amount of time, they may exist in the environment for hundreds of years. Plastic pollution has become a global crisis that affects all of us.
The beverage industry is broken.
Roughly 500 billion plastic bottles are produced every year, and only 1 in 6 are recycled. Approximately half of those plastic bottles are used for bottled water, contributing 8 million tons of CO2 annually. Pre-bottled beverages have been the norm for a long time, and we believe that it is time for a change.
What are we doing about it?
Our microdrinks are made with high-quality natural plant and fruit extracts that enrich water with flavour and vitamins, and are packaged using 98% less plastic than pre-filled drinks. Highly portable and easy to use, they allow you to add flavour and vitamins to your water at the point of consumption, eliminating the need for a plastic bottle. Enjoying one 12 pack of microdrinks is equivalent to a reduction of 4kg (8.8 lbs) of CO2 emissions. By using 98% less plastic than pre-packaged drinks, and reducing your carbon footprint, you can feel good about staying hydrated with waterdrop®.
Alongside microdrinks, our reusable Drinkware further eliminates the need for plastic bottles. Combining style with function, our Bottles not only look good and keep your drinks cold or hot for hours, but they contribute to a world where single-use plastic bottles are no longer the go-to.
An Example
In 2018, we partnered with the Seezeitlodge Hotel & Spa. This stunning location offers gorgeous rooms and incredible amenities such as a spa, fine-dining restaurant, meditation facilities, and now, waterdrop® microdrinks. By replacing their monthly orders of plastic water bottles with waterdrop® microdrinks, as of 2021, Seezeitlodge avoided 425kg (937 lbs) of plastic.
To put that amount into context, the average plastic bottle (600ml/20oz) weighs 18.71g (0.04 lbs), meaning that the equivalent of 24,051 plastic bottles were avoided. The production of that many bottles would have resulted in 2284kg (5035.4 lbs) of CO2. It would take the planting of 128 trees to rebalance the emissions caused by these plastic bottles. This is a great example of how one decision can have a direct and positive impact on the planet.
What about the plastic already out there?
With every pack of microdrinks sold, we pay for one collected plastic bottle that has been discarded in the environment. In partnership with Plastic Bank, we have collected more than 13 million plastic bottles. This means that we remove 4 times more plastic from the environment than we use. Some say that it’s a drop in the bucket, at waterdrop® we believe that every drop counts.
